Slow LAN , XP problem??

40287.1

I have a LAN at home of 4 computers which are connected via a router ( SMC Barricade), I was using windows 2000 ADvanced server before , but recently decided that I wanted to scrap down the server-client as the advanced server was getting really slow. I reformat the Windows 2000 server computer and decided to install Windows XP professional instead. However ever since I installed XP professional, my LAN network was getting really slow...

- When I ping my router from the XP professional computer , I will be getting more than 1000 ms. I had to reboot my SMC router to bring back the response to normal, however about couple of minutes, the response is getting really slow again. The strange thing is, when the slow response occurs, all my other computers are also having the same problem i.e ping from the other computers also having very slow response

At first I thought that my router was having problem, but then the problem really occured if I connected that XP professional computer to the LAN, If I disconnected the computer from the LAN, response from my other computers are good....

I have tried to change the utp cable, swapped around but no luck.. Please give me some possible causes of this: Is it simply caused by:

-Windows XP professional?

- the network card?

-the router?

Thanks in advance

Re: Slow LAN , XP problem??

Hi,

I was looking at your problem, and thinking of the myraid of possible things (i.e. RPC, IPX broadcasting, Netbeui, IM bugs, etc), but then it dawned on me that you said reseting the router brought it back to normal for a while (I'm assuming that you also reset the XP around the same time).

I think your problem may be an automatic update trying to take place repeatedly, which is filling up your pipe to the internet. Try setting it to manual (Right click "My Computer" go into properties, choose the automatic update tab, and check the update manually option).

If this improves your speed, then you want to go into the "add/remove programs" wizard, and you will probably find like a hundred or more updates for the same patch. You need to purge all of them (start with the most recent), and then restart the auto-updates with the "Prompt" option to see what is failing. You may have a permission issue on the auto-update.

Hope this helps...

Re: Slow LAN , XP problem??

If you didn't patch the XP for the blaster worm before you put it on line it may be infected and the worm is trying to spread. It really puts a load on the network when this happens. Do a Ctrl + Alt + Del and go to task manager/ Processes and click on CPU. The top process should be the system idle time. If it is anything else that process is a possible virus or virus stooge. We recently had a worm where the top process was scvhost.exe. Note there are several benign instances of svchost.exe (v and c reversed) on a normal PC so don't kill off the wrong one. We had another where the top process was services.exe which is a normal process but was being driven to extremes by the virus. (It handles the network connection).

windowsupdate.microsoft.com for the patch.
