Remember that there is also always the problem with channel separation: Of the 11 802.11 channels, channels 1, 6 and 11 are generally known to be the only none-overlapping ones. Hence it might be good practice to use one of them.
Also, do you use an external antenna? If so, make sure you got good cable. The typical RG58 50 Ohm cable used for antenna purposes have way too high attenuation (0.82dB/m) at the 2.4GHz frequency. Use cables from Aircom (0.22dB/m) or Aircell (0.38dB/m) instead.
Then, if you suspect something wrong with the firmware, go Linux and try OpenWRT http://openwrt.org/
