Compatibility of RAID controller

For e.g. SmartArray 641 RAID controller
there are mentioned in compatibility list
just some ProLiant servers,
should it mean that using it on other
harware is it possible some problems
to arise in its functionality?
Is it not enough to have support in OS
for that controller, when it uses standard
PCI-X interface? Why there is a need to
have specialized hardware?

Re: Compatibility of RAID controller

Probably is a match between the server SCSI bus and the controller bus, i.e. U160 rated hotswap backplane. But there is no reason why you could not use it on a slower old bus, just the specs would change, and HP doesn't want to get into logistical problems

Re: Compatibility of RAID controller

OK, so I can use it in every
nonHP server provided that e.g.
I use corresponding backplane,
have PCI-X interface. The compatibility
list is just for HP servers telling
which servers have such a corresponding
hardware to work with that.
Do I understand that well?
