EVA8400

Hey out there

I see plenty of documentation on replacing a disk drive in an M6412 enclosure.

But nothing about adding net new drives.

Simply stick one in, wait, see it in CmdView, repeat for the rest.
Then do the firmware update on the drives.
Then add them to a disk group.

Is that it?

I have an EVA8400 with 27 M6412 Disk shelves. With exisiting 600GB 10K FC drives and 1TB FATA drives. I'm adding 10 450GB FC 10k drives we unexpectedly had available. Going to add to a separate disk group for a specific function.

Cheers

Re: EVA8400

Thanks Uwe.

Give you a full 10 pts if you can find an actual doc that says that.

For now I'll give you 8.

Post the doc and you'll get another 10.
8-)

Re: EVA8400

Well, then it's no 10 points, I am afraid ;-)

I don't recall I have even seen a 'complete' description. In some pre-X400 manuals it was even written that you could add up to 4 disks drives at once -- I guess that is the reason why I find EVAs with duplicate disk names from time to time.

In my opinion, many EVA manuals are not really 'top quality'.
When I look into the HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array user guide (5697-0118__20090919, 6th edition, September 2009), I see 'very useful' statements like:

""
* Adding disk drives to the storage system

As your storage requirements grow, you may be adding disk drives to your storage system.

Adding new disk drives is the easiest way to increase the storage capacity of the storage system.

Disk drives can be added online without impacting storage system operation.
""

And that's it for this topic :-(

Re: EVA8400

I'm going to be adding another shelf with 12 drives to my EVA4400.

The last time I did this I grouped one drive at a time. Obviously it would be quicker if I could group multiples or infact all 12.

Re: EVA8400

The latest "best practices guide" (4AA2-0914ENW__20100331) for the EVA-x400 series suggests to add disks in groups of 8 disks. Why it recommends the use of SSSU ""Unless otherwise indicated, add new disks to existing disk groups using the HP StorageWorks Storage System Scripting Utility add multiple disks command"" instead of CV-EVA is not explained... Well, I did not go through the whole file - maybe it is in some other place, but I have better things to do with my time.

It still gives another useful advice if you have multiple disk groups or want to create a new group:
- Set the add disk option to manual

Otherwise the controller firmware will add a new disk to the disk group with the least amount of free space.

Re: EVA8400

CLEB,

You physically add the disks 1 at a time.

Then you check the firmware is up to date on the disks.

If not then update the firmware.

Once the disks are ready you can group them all at once into a disk group. Try to keep the number of disks in the Disk group as a multiple of 8.
