Smart Array 5302

I have a Proliant ML530 with a SA-3200 controller installed in slot 1 (32/33Mhz primary). I just purchased a SA-5302 128MB and would like to install it into the ML530. I would like to install it into slot 7 or 8 (64/66Mhz secondary). Is it just a matter of taking out the 3200 and putting in the 5302 and then going into system config utility and setting the boot controller order? Do I have to specify that the array controller moved slots or will it pick it up automatically?

Well yes and no. The driver for the 5300 differs from that of the 3200. I would recommend adding the controller to unit then run F10 so it "sees" the controller and make sure the 3200 is still 1st in boot order, then leaving your 3200 in boot to your OS. Boot to your OS and run the latest Compaq/HP support paq this will install the drive needed for the 5300 controller. Once that is done reboot the server and run F10 this time setting the 5300 controller to 1st in the boot order then save and exit. Power unit down remove 3200 controller connect cable to 5300 controller reboot to F10 again and run this is allow it tom remove the 3200 from it's nvram info. save exit and boot to your OS. If you are running NT/W2k you will of course get and error device failed to start. If you go to your service stop the cpqarray(2) that is the 3200 driver. The one for the 5300 is cisse.

I have a similar problem, we want to clone a system with an integrated smart array (ML370) to a new DL380 G2 with a smart 5i, but when we restore the backup to the DL380 we get the unacessible boot device message. Is there a way to do this without having to put a similar controller in the ML370 to install the driver (for example, to make the new installation from the backup to install the smart 5i driver after the restore process)? This is important because we have many old systems that we will eventually need to restore in new hardware (for example because a hardware failure) and we could not get it to work.

There are a number of ways to do this:

Which OS is this? If NT4 and Win2K are being used, then you can manually add the driver (add/remove hardware in 2000 and install driver in NT4), verify it's set to boot, then move it over to the other controller.

Obviously the old standby server recovery for NT4 and 2000 (repair, recovery console, etc.) will work too.
