72GB Drives

Hi all,

Has anyone had problems with 72GB drives.

We know about the problem with invalid reads on disks produced tween April & Sept 2003. We've run the software hdserial.exe and come up clean every time, but we still seem to be getting a high proportion of failures on them. Any info gratefully received. Servers are ML530 running w2k & notes, netware.

regards jc

Re: 72GB Drives

You can trying running L&TT if running Novell 5.0 and up and update/flash the firmware, and run the tests.

Re: 72GB Drives

While I would not exactly call them "problems", we did have what I thought was an unusually high infant mortality rate in our Enterprise storage systems (EMA style HSG80's) in our SAN that where purchased about 2 years ago. (Cache batteries are due for replacement next month.) Beyond that, with 3000+ spindles, they are not failing any more often than the 18's, 36's, or 146's.

Re: 72GB Drives

Thank you all for responding.

We are running latest softpaq for HDserial. With regards to failure rate, we primarily use 18 & 36 GB drives, we only have aprox 20-30 72 GB HD, we've replaced at least 6/7 of them.. Seems a high failure rate to me.

John:

Hmmmnnn:

Not quite as bad as when I'd had to replace 140%+ of the disks on an IBM Mainframe over 10 years ago: That turned out to be a manufacturing fault. We got could at rebuilding databases....

I think if I was in yours shoes I'd have a firm and direct discussion with my reseller / HP, request clarification & advice AND I'd check over my backup/recovery plans & procedures & see if I can find a copy of the DR plan (filed, of course, not in the office...)

Wishing you god luck...
