A4909A (st318375wd) help! cannot format

Heres my problem I have serveal dozen of these drives that need to be tested before going into production. Is there anyway to do with without putting them in a k-box?? I tried connecting them to a AHA-2944UW diff scsi controller and using Deriks Boot & Nuke to wipe the data to DOD standards, but it never finds a drive.. I tried to go into the adaptec firmware and do a format from there but the drive does not ID. Does the hp firmware on the drive allow it ONLY to be seen in a kbox? Seems to me this drive should at least ID with the controller. I HAVE been able to remove the contoller/adapter board off the drive and put it a hotswap tray and fromat from a SE scsi controller.. whats the deal? any help appreciated thanks!

do they at least register in the ioscan after you plug them in. Otherwise I would suspect something wrong with the hardware (disk or the controller)

Re: A4909A (st318375wd) help! cannot format

I suspect what is missing is an HVD terminator and yes, even the terminators are HVD specific. Make sure that the controller terminates one end of the bus and the other terminator is at the other phydsical end of the bus. Beyond that there is really nothing special about these drives. I assume that you are able to set a unique SCSI ID for each of these drives on a common bus and that at least one device on the bus is supplying termination power --- which is not the same as terminated.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

It was the cable I was using, it was terminated SE, not diff.. I ended up gutting an old shoebox to do 5 drives at a time, and connected it to X computer wiht the diff card and everything is running like a champ! Thank you both for you help!!!!
