Re: HARD DRIVE

Hi,

what do you mean by set to factory default? May I assume, this is not the boot drive?

Re: HARD DRIVE

Thr computer has been reset to what it was the day I bought it, so everything I have done, e.g.Excelfiles has been lost. So the computer is working fine, but without any data accumulated in the past 3 years, and this is what I am trying to retrieve.

Much of the information has not been written over, but I cannot retrieve it.

Thanks

Re: HARD DRIVE

I turned my computer on as normal on Friday and got to the desktop screen and it froze. After about 10 goes, I tried loading my emergency diskette which didn't work , I tried loading in Safe Mode, which didn't work. So I then tried to load my Compaq User Backup, which didn't work and displayed an error message. On the next restart an error message came up which said something like, no OS can be found on any disks, so I checked that my A; was empty and it was, so I did a check on C: in DOS and what was my D: (System Backup Drive), had replaced my C:.

I this point I realised that the my hard disk had been reformatted. So I decided to opt for the factory backup state, which would put it back to its original factory state , seeing as my C; drive had already been wiped.

So I think that the Compaq user backup option wiped my disk.

But I am in now in a situation where I have lost most of my files , I have used PC Recovery which has recovered about 30 files, But obviously I would like to find more.

Re: HARD DRIVE

You will have to decide what lengths you would go to to retrieve any of the lost data. Much of it may still exist, stored in a somewhat jumbled state on the original host drive.

Possible starting points, with downloadable utilities for inspecting the scope of data damage and recoverability are, for example at:

http://www.partition-recovery.com/ and at:

http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/

EasyRecovery├в ┬в (View recoverable files)
Important: EasyRecovery v6.0 includes Windows and DOS versions in one. The files below are Windows installation files. They are to be run once from a working Windows system. After installation, to create the DOS version of EasyRecovery, select the EmergencyDiskette tool. As an added benefit, the Zip repair component is fully functional and allows you to recover and repair deleted or corrupt Zip files for free!
Please Note: The Trial editions are of our EasyRecovery DataRecovery and EasyRecovery Professional softwa
