hardrive upgrade

i am trying to replace the 1.2 gig hardrive with a used 6.4 gig hardrive . when i start the computer i get an eroror message . I/O error. replace disk and strike any key to continue. i have been using the 6.4 in another computer as a backup. it was working when i remove it. any suggestions? i am trying to install it in a presario 9232.
