Firstly, if I am in the wrong message board, kindly direct me to the correct one.....
I have a Compaq 5423US, 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR RAM, 80GB Ultra DMA HD (per Compaq). Lately, when I start my machine, it often makes a strange noise. The noise is intermittent and does not always parrallel HD activity. My fan appears to be working. I fear the HD may be failing.
I have backed-up files and may update a (bootable) full system drive image backup.
What is the best way to determine if this noise is, in fact, the HD? If so, are replacement drives available from HP-Compaq or will any comparable HD suffice? What is a good source with step-by-step instructions for replacing a hard drive? As you might gather, I've never replaced a HD before :-)
Your time and expertise are greatly appreciated.
