hot-swappable/pluggable disks

Hello Everybody,

Is there any significant difference between hot swappable and hot pluggable disks?

If I have to replace a hot-swappable disk and if I have to replace a hot-pluggable disk, will I follow same procedure for both.

Thanks in advance..

Re: hot-swappable/pluggable disks

hi,

hotswapable = can be replaced online, but the os don't care about replication of the failed disk = raid controller make the work

hotplugable = can be replaced online, but the os need to take ccare about distributing the data to the disk = for example LVM / VXVM

Re: hot-swappable/pluggable disks

Hi,

hot-swappable device
=====================
A hot-swappable device does not require interaction with the operating system before
the device is removed from or installed into the server.

hot-pluggable device
====================
A hot-pluggable device can require interaction with the operating system before
you can safely remove or install the device into the server. Determine whether
the operating system supports replacement of disk drives while the operating system
is running. If the operating system does not support hot-plugging,
shut down the operating system before performing these procedures.
Failure to observe this caution can result in system failure.

Re: hot-swappable/pluggable disks

All answers are good.

addition:

hot-pluggable means that
the bus and connectors are made so that the disk module can be inserted
or removed without removing the terminator for the array. All hardware
modules are easily removed from the front of the chassis.
