How to tell ?
Sep 22, 2005 08:07:31 GMT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whenever I buy HP HDD`s I want to be 100% sure that the drives are genuine HP products. As I travel world-wide I have heard stories about counterfeit drives from the far-east. I have bought drives in the far-east a couple of times but never experienced any problems. Other than serial number check- any other methods to tell right from wrong ? Labels ? Box ?
Appreciate any answers
Kjetil

Re: How to tell ?
That's tougher than you might think... HP doesn't actually manufacture any hard drives of its own, but rather re-sells various manufacturers' devices. HP does apply its own model numbers and firmware to the devices. The model numbers are included on the label on the disk drive, but getting the firmware rev requires actually plugging the drive into something. Attached is a link to a matrix of current model numbers and firmware revs for Fibre Channel HDDs. I suspect you could find a similar matrix for SCSI HDDs with enough digging around on HP's web-site.

Re: How to tell ?
Hi Kjetil
Suggest to buy such HDDs only from HP authorised resellers in the region. hp.com has list of authorised resellers.
