nc6000 hard drive strange behavior
Hello,
hope you can help me.
Since a couple of weeks, the hard drive of my nc6000 notebook occasionally starts to make a strange noise, as if it is searching, but it is more like a "bee" noise, slightly different that the typical hd.
The led is on and clearly the hd is doing something.
When this starts, it goes on for a few seconds then stops. Applications becomes slow to respond and in a matter of minutes, all application hang up and do not respond and the system is hang up. At this time, the only solution is to switch off power and after rebooting, a chkdsk is started automatically and errors are found on both partition C: and D: with messages on :
- directory enumeration
- recovering orphaned file ...
- security descriptor
- verifying indexes
It appears that errors are found in the hard disk data and recovery is performed. After this reboot normally everything then works ok with no data loss, but it seems that something wrong occurs. This problem has occurred in the past sometimes (once a week) and only recently once a day.
Is this indication of a hardware problem or it mat be that a reformatting of the partition or other action can avoid the re-occurrance of this problem?
Thanks in advance
Marco

Re: nc6000 hard drive strange behavior
Hi Marco,
Your hard drive is failing. Backup your data asap. Then access the setup BIOS and perform a HDD selftest. Write down any of the error message at boot time and during the self test. If if fails on any of the tests, call HP for an RMA.
