Pav5010 - Problem with HDD not being recognized.

I am trying to help out a friend, but as yet without any success. My problem is:
After the blue initial screen runs I get the "Operating System Not Found" error. The CMOS shows no settings for a hard disk. I've tried auto and manual setup for the original drive, plus a WD1.6GB and a WD540MB drive. The CD-ROM boots every time. The primary and secondary drive channels both checked OK, ribbons checked OK and jumpers were set to master. OS is Win95, FDISK results in "No Fixed Disk Present". Any suggestions are appreciated.
