SCSI Query

SCSI Query

Is it safe to remove a SCSI device from a SMART Field Enclosure without powering down the system.

Like for example remove a DLT drive from the Smart Field Enclosure.

Is it safe to replace one back !!!

I ask this question becuase usually they say that it is unsafe to remove a SCSI device from an active bus. It might blow fuses on controller or devices ??

Re: SCSI Query

It is safe to remove and replace a unit from a smart enclosure as with any device make sure there is no I/O activity. There should also be no problem re-installing in a unix system so long as there are no changes to the device files.

Re: SCSI Query

If you have autoterminate chains SCSI problem to complete operations to warmth not there. Otherwise an anomalous opening of the chain with consequent of crash of the system.

Re: SCSI Query

If your hardware is hot-swap or hot-plug there is no problem. You can remove any device from that hardware online.

I have did it several times on some type of SCSI, and it never cause any problem, specialy if there is only a tape o CD-rom on the channel.

But , yes it is posible to burn fuses or at least get some messages about scsi resets.

Unsuported if hardware is not hot-plug.
