VM Disk Extend

When trying to extend a VM disk it says the VM must reboot due to our configuration.

The VM is a Windows server 2022.

We are using Generic GFS2 iSCSI LUNs as the backend datastore.

Does this mean iSCSI LUNs do not allow hot extends?

Re: VM Disk Extend

Adding to this further I found that doing this from the instance allowed the disk to be extended with no reboot however doing it from the VM page directly rebooted it.

I also found that removing CD Disks caused the VM to reboot no matter where I did this from.

Can we really not add and remove disks without a reboot?

Ouch! Looks like HPE VME has a lot of room for improvements! That's not how you attract VMware users quickly

Re: VM Disk Extend

@RBarlow92 I was on a beach in Costa Rica when you posted this so my apologies for the delayed response. Here's what my Copilot Notebook (based on v9.0.1 documentation) says:

Based on your testing, it does not appear that GFS2/iSCSI storage itself is preventing online disk expansion.

You noted that expanding the disk from the Instance view succeeded without requiring a reboot, while performing a similar operation from the VM view triggered a reboot. That suggests the behavior may be tied to the management workflow being used rather than an inherent limitation of the underlying datastore.

HVM supports VM reconfiguration operations, including resizing workloads and adding/removing disks and network interfaces. The documentation also notes that some reconfiguration actions may require an Instance restart depending on the operation being performed.

To better understand what you're seeing, could you provide:
  • VM Essentials version
  • HVM cluster layout version
  • Whether the disk is the boot volume or a secondary volume
  • The exact steps used from the VM page versus the Instance page
The differing behavior between those two workflows is the key detail here.

Re: VM Disk Extend

Can you verify the version you are seeing this on?

Current behavior should not trigger a reboot when ejecting a CD-ROM or when extending a virtual disk on a VM.
