The P420 RAID controller uses a cache memory module to improve write performance and protect unwritten data during power loss. When the cache module fails, HPE disables write caching to prevent data loss.

Common causes

1. Failed FBWC capacitor (super-capacitor)

   • Most common failure on Gen8 servers.
   • Cache becomes disabled because the backup power source cannot charge properly. 
     
     

2. Failed cache memory module

   • The cache DIMM/module attached to the P420 controller may be defective. 

     >> Loose connection: Cache module or capacitor cable may be partially disconnected.
     >> Controller firmware issue: Older firmware versions have occasionally caused cache-related errors. Updating firmware has resolved the issue in some cases.

Recommended checks:

1. Check iLO Integrated Management Log (IML)

Look for messages such as:

• "Please replace Cache Module Super-Cap"
• "Cache disabled"
• "Backup power source failed to charge"
• "Cache module hardware failure"

These messages will indicate whether the fault is the cache card or the capacitor.

2. Check Smart Array details

From the OS, run:  ssacli ctrl slot=3 show detail

Look for fields like:

Cache Status,

Cache Status Details,

Cache Backup Power Source,

Battery/Capacitor Status.

If you see: 

Cache Status: Permanently Disabled.

Backup power source failed.

the super-capacitor is likely faulty.

3. Reseat components

Power down the server and:

• Reseat the P420 controller.
• Reseat the cache module.
• Check the capacitor cable connection.

A loose cache module can trigger this alert.

4. Update firmware

Update:

• P420 controller firmware
• System ROM (BIOS)
• iLO firmware
