Simplivity Backup
Hello everybody.
I have an HPE Simplivity cluster (2host + Arbiter) and was looking to implement a secondary backup solution, different from the integrated backup offered by Simplivity itself.
My idea is to use Simplivity native backup solution to run a high frequency / low retention time backup strategy and use another backup solution for a low frequency / high retention time backup strategy
I was looking for the HPE StoreOnce solution (which is natively integrated on Simplivity), but the low-end models have been killed by HPE and are not available anywhere
I'm thinking of trying a StoreOnce VSA, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra layer of complexity in between (the esxi hypervisor and on top the VSA VM).
I have the old virtualization server available, but I don't even know the cost of the VSA licenses
Another idea I have is to reuse our backup software which is currently used (ALTARO)
What have you implemented?
Thanks so much for any suggestions.

Rif.: Simplivity Backup
i'm in your exact situation : 2 host + arbiter
i have tried altaro but in the end i am using veeam v12 with the old server
repurposed as a linux immutable repository
I don't use altaro becuase of the lack of immutablity on-prem, only cloud
please be advised to use NBD transport mode as per HPE/Veeam best pratcise
Regards

Re: Simplivity Backup
Using StoreOnce with integration in SimpliVity is one way to get more traditional archival space for long term storage (vs. storing your backups on the same media as your data). It works, but depending on your currently running environment (more specifically your Omnistack version), you may want to upgrade first. However, the backup process still stores the data on the StoreOnce similarly to native SimpliVity Backups. You can restore from them to your cluster and reconnect to federation in case of a failed environment, but there is no other flexibility with regard to the actual data and accessing it outside of a SimpliVity environment.
Outside of SimpliVity Backups, Veeam, as mentioned, works great with SimpliVity. The backups are outside of the pervue of the native SimpliVity Backups and can be fully manipulated by the Veeam Server, backup copies to other repositories, cloud copies, etc.
I am sure other backup products work well also.
