VCX 100 Help
Hi Everyone,
We have a VCX 100, and I have a couple of questions. When we bought it, we were told it came with SoftPhone capability. They told us to download X-Lite. Is there another SoftPhone client that is 3Com Branded?
Also, we have 8 analog lines. We'd like to get rid of 4 of them, and try 4 SIP trunks. Can we use analog lines and SIP trunks both with a VCX100? Do I configure the SIP trunks in the gateway portions? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Mike

Re: VCX 100 Help
You probably need to contact a local 3Com person for details specially when you start talking about SIP trunks. But here is some stuff to get started
X-Lite should work fine but if your looking for something from 3Com. They did have what they called their "Convergent Client" which was a softphone. Not sure whats going on so call you 3Com contact.
Regarding SIP Trunks. SIP trunk today are like ISDN to Telcos in the past. While ISDN was a standard there were still some idiosyncrasies when connecting one vendor ISDN standard to another vendors ISDN standard interface.
While PBX SIP Proxies like VCX, CISCO etc and SIP Trunk carriers both use SIP. Not all SIP stacks are created equal. Make sure you understand what the carrier and the VCX can provide to each other.
Also keep in mind SIP Trunks should be front ended with a firewall between VCX and the SIP Trunk provider. Some SIP specific firewalls are on the market that have been approved as firewalls by SIP trunk providers.
Lastly a SIP trunk is an IP address so you typically don't need more than 2 ( 1 for redundancy). Each SIP trunk would be provisioned somewhat like a T1/E1 where the limit the number of DID etc.
Hope this helps
Good luck
