Bootup issue with HP netraid cards

Hey Guys,

I am trying to setup an old LH4r server with win2k that has an internal integrated netraid adaptor, with a HP Netraid card that has 2 Netserver/6 storage servers hanging off it.

Initially I had the raid controllers booting up seeing the internal harddrives and the external Netserver/6 units, but when you get to the Win2k setup it wants to install win2k to the external Netserver units. If for the hell of it I decide I will go down this path when you next boot up on post the netraid devices display the logical drives with no errors, but it cannot find the operating system.

I was told that you have to turn of SCSI in the BIOS so that the system displays the local harddrives first when you come to the Win2k setup, but this did not resolve the problem.

The only way I could install to the local harddrives was to clear the Netraid adaptor of any Netserver/s drives then re booting so that the only harddrives that the system saw was the local ones. If I re-configure the raid controller so that it displays the netserver/6 units the system tries to boot from them even though I have configured the BIOS to look a the local harddrives first.

It is almost as if the BIOS sees the attached netservers/6 storage units as the local harddrives and ignores the internal ones.

I have updated the BIOS, the internal integrated raid adaptor, and the raid controller card for the netserver/6 devices.

Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated, as I do not have much more hair to pull out :).

Andrew.

Re: Bootup issue with HP netraid cards

Andrew, you could try this:

disable the BIOS of the Netraid card and enable the BIOS of the onboard Netraid.

To do this you have to do a little trick, because I think you cannot enable the BIOS of 1 netraid and disbale it on the other netraid when both are in the server.

Try this steps:

- power on the server and enter setup with F2.
- scroll down to integrated netraid and disable it.
- press F10 to save and exit
- restart server and press Ctrl-M to enter Netraid Express Tools of Netraid PCI card.
- scroll down to 'Disable BIOS'. press Enter and select YES (you will see that the option in the main menu changed from DISABLE BIOS to ENABLE BIOS).
- Save and exit
- Now power down the server and remove the PCI Netraid card
- power it on again and enter SETUP with F2
- Enable Netraid cards
- Save and Exit
- Press Ctrl-M during boot to enter netraid express tools of the integrated netraid
- Make sure that the BIOS is ENABLED (So the option in the main menu should display DISABLE BIOS), change if necessary.
- Save and exit
- power off the server
- Put PCI NEtraid card back in
- Try to install w2k on integrated netraid, it should work now.

Good luck!!!

Re: Bootup issue with HP netraid cards

Hey Marco,

Thanks for the reply. I would love to say that it resolved my issue, but it hasn't.

When I get to the Win2k setup mode and select the hard drive it is still displaying the Netserver/6 (PCI netraid)devices first in the list. If I select the Hard drives off the Intergrated internal card the Win2k setup still wants to use the PCI Netraid drives as the local hard drives during the installation and will boot with "Missing Operating System".

If I disable the PCI Netraid cards so that the system only sees the Intergrated Netraid I can install and run Win2k. I put the PCI Netraid cards back in with the BIOS enabled or disabled and the LH4r server still wants to boot from the PCI Netraid cards.
