HP LC3 Daul Processor Help (NT4)

I am upgrading from a single PII 450 to a dual PIII 550 configuration. Does anyone have any suggestions procdurely or know of any particular caveats to watch out for. Main concerns are chip recognition because I will not be reloading NT, just adding the chips and powering back up. BIOS, SWITCH settings, NT settings would be helpful.

Re: HP LC3 Daul Processor Help (NT4)

There is no problem in NT changing single PII 450 to a single PIII 550, because NT use the same uniprocessor kernel in both cases. Problem is changing uniprocessor kernel to multiprocessor. There is a utility in NT resource kit called "unitomulti" which was supposed to do kernel changing but this utility is full of bugs and requires many manual steps to finish job corecty. The best method is not to use this utility but do the job manually. There is very good article on microsoft support site which describes manual methods:
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q156358
If you want more knowledge about problem you can go to: http://support.microsoft.com, select your OS and start search with keyword multiprocessor...
If you had windows2000 the problem would be simple: device manager, update computer driver...

Thank you Enes. I will check out the articles. Have you actually done the procedure. I guess what I really need to know is does it work. Also, Have you used the NT resource unitomulti?

Yes, I did it twice. First time I used unitomulti but I had many problems. I spent half a day to finish job manually. Next time I started with manual procedure and it took less than one hour.

Re: HP LC3 Daul Processor Help (NT4)

Enes,
Which HAL file would I us for an HP LC3 NetServer? Secondly, do I have to install NT into a seperate directory and copy the pertinent files from there. It would seem that since I have to use the appropriate service pack files(6a high encrypt) I could just copy them from my service pack cd, RIGHT??? Thanks!

Re: HP LC3 Daul Processor Help (NT4)

1. You need Halmps.dll = "MPS Multiprocessor PC"
2. Some files you need to exchange are allways open when NT is up and you can not rename them, copy over them, etc. Thats why you need installation of NT in another folder, just to free files on orginal installation to manipulate them. (This can be achieved using some tools which can handle ntfs files from dos, too).
3. You HAVE to use files from service pack because old and new files have to match in version.
4. Read previosly mentioned Microsoft's article again, more carefully.
5. Do not forget last step: editing setup.inf. If you do, reapplaying of service pack will revert hal to uni.
