HP Netserver LH3 crashing problem

I have this problem with this server, it keeps crashing constantly. Here are some of its symptoms:

1.) It crashes and makes strange "gurgling" noises. I think it might be an error beep code, but it sounds similar to when a dialup modem dials a wrong number and you get the operator's voice through it.

2.) When it crashes, the CD-ROM light flashes rapidly and doesn't stop. I removed the CD-ROM drive, but it still crashes.

3.) I am not able to use the Reset button when it crashes, I have to press the Power button.

4.) The DIMM LEDs flash, first 0,2, and 3 flash simultaneously, then they turn off and 1 flashes. They alternate.

5.) When I managed once to have it up long enough to run the HP Diagnostic Assistant program, the event log was filled with "Multiple-bit error in memory slot 2 on bank/board 1"

Now, what is strange is that if I leave it alone for a long time, it will usually be stable for a while, like 30min. But if it crashes once, then it will crash frequently. Sometimes right after I turn it on, sometimes during the POST, and sometimes when I try to use the Win2k setup floppies (never successfully installed Win2k). It seems random.

If anyone knows what is wrong with this server and can help me, I'd be very appreciative.

Eric,

Try removing that memory card, which you might have to rebalance the memory cards. If that doesn't help, I'd say call HP.

Re: HP Netserver LH3 crashing problem

I've already tried swapping the memory around, and running the server with each RAM individually, but no go. I haven't tried different RAM yet though. I also tried moving the Xeon microproccesors around, but I haven't tried completely new ones yet.

Re: HP Netserver LH3 crashing problem

hi
two thinks:

-- erro multiple bit error in slot 2 bank one mean you need to replace this dimm,

-- the leds blinking :
The diagnostic LEDs indicate specific error conditions by alternating blink codes at 1 Hz, as listed below:

LED Error Codes
Alternating Blink Codes: Error Condition Corrective Action
X-0-0-0
O-X-X-X
Primary VRM Failure Check that primary voltage regulator module (VRM) is correctly seated. If problem persists, replace VRM.
O-X-O-O
X-O-X-X
Secondary VRM Failure Check that secondary VRM is correctly seated. If problem persists, replace VRM.
X-O-O-X
O-X-X-O
Processor Over-Temperature Check fan for function. Turn off system, wait 20-25 minutes for system to cool, and restart system.
O-O-X-X
X-X-O-O
Processor or Terminator Board Not Installed Install processor in primary processor socket and a processor or terminator board in secondary processor socket.

O = LED on
X = LED off

Check also in the SEL (hardware log with navigator if you do not reach the higher limit, (maz 512 events) then clear to have fresh messages

Re: HP Netserver LH3 crashing problem

Thanks for those codes. I think its a bad VRM, so I went ahead and ordered a new one.
