LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

My machine is a Hewlett Packard NetServer LH 3 using Windows 2000 Advanced Server. It has a Pentium II 400MHz MMX 512 MB RAM. an onboard i960 Intel chip, NetRaid Controller and Three 9.1 Gig SCSI Ultra 2 Hard Drives using RAID 0.

I want to upgrade to this Processor. Already purchased and doesn't work.

Intel Pentium III 600 Mhz Slot 1 Processor w/ LARGE attached Heat Sink. The specs for this CPU are as follows: 600MHz/256K L2 Cache/100MHz FSB/1.65SV (MALAY) 5 Digit code is SL43E

Pentium?? III Processor s-Spec Information http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p3p.htm http://developer.intel.com/design/PentiumIII/prodbref/

I've set the dip switches to the proper settings. Tech support says the don't support a third party purchase of this processor.
I put a lot of research into this purchase, thought it was the right processor but I was wrong??? Does HP and Intel work together on this to design a specific processor for this machine? It doesn't even seem to fit right although it will fit into the slot its tilted up at a slight angle. Where can I purchase the correct (600MHz)processor? Prefferably two of them for a dual processor setup. My budget won't allow new ones or direct from HP. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

Just wondering, did you ever read the LH3 Spec's?

I'd like to know where in that it says it supports a PIII processor. As far as I was aware, the LH3/4 series of servers only supported PII's up to about 450Mhz.

When doing a multi-processor type thing, the CPU's have to be identical (ie. same Mhz, same cache, same class (ie Xeon) etc.).

As for the physical aspects of the processors, I don't beleive they are specifically built for HP. I've seen 3rd party (clone) machine's with the same physically sized processor casts.

Sorry for the dissapointing news, but I don't think you'll be able to get a PIII 600 to work in an LH3.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

... and this is where I get to eat my own words re PIII on an LH3.

After doing a bit of reasearch, I see that they could take up to a PIII 600Mhz (according to their 'partsurfer.hp.com', with an extra cooling kit), but they are no longer in supply.

I don't recall using a LH3 with a PIII processor, so.. Sorry. But the note about same speed processors still stands for SMP/MPX.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

Thanks Stuart. The LH 3 does support a PIII processor upgrade up to 600MHz. Your first note prompted me to do a little more research. I have not yet read this manual but perhaps it will help me. Still don't know why the PIII 600MHz processor I purchased wont work. I will also try the address you listed(partsurfer.hp.com), although you said they are no more in supply. Is there anywhere else that might supply the upgrade kit? Have you heard of Paramount Computer Corporation? http://www.pmount.com/default.asp
I guess they deal HP used parts. I haven't researced the product on their site yet.

Heres the link to the PIII upgrade manual.

Scroll to Upgrade Manuals and click this catagory: (hp netserver e 60, lc 3, lh 3/3r, and lpr Processor Upgrade Guide PDF, 377K, 3/19/2000)

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

Hi,

You should be using Pentium III 600 MHz with a 512KB cache instead of 256KB. Your LH3 can support up to Pentium III-600MHz, 512KB cache, 100MHZ Bus. You must use an identical set of processors. By the way, have you slot in an additional VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) for the new the second processor ? HP uses genuine Intel processor, so getting another processor from a 3rd party should not have any performance issue.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

Thanks JJ, thats what I need to know. Here's the specs of the processor I bought (aparantly the wrong one)

It didn't even fit right. Can you tell me which chip I should get for an LH 3. I don't want to get the wrong one again. Can you be a little more specific. Much thanks Gregg

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

HP Part Number: D9342A

As far the actual specs: PIII/600MHz/512KB/100MHz FSB.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade Doesn't Work

I don't think you can get it from HP anymore. If I'm not mistaken, HP has stop producing the part. Try to buy it somewhere else. Also, if you plan to setup dual processor, you must get an identical set. And don't forget the additional VRM. You can get the VRM from HP.
