Netserver E60 memory problem

I have a HP Netserver E60 with 2 x 128MB or HP RAM. I have just purchased 2 x 256MB (non-genuine - Legend) HP RAM but when I install it, there is no display. The machine fails to boot correctly. However, when I install this RAM into another E60, it's fine. I have tested every configuration possible with the RAM. Could it be the RAM itself? Or the motherboard (needing genuine HP)?

Re: Netserver E60 memory problem

Mat,

What are the specs on the memory?

Most likely you bought incompatible memory for the server. The E60 requires 100mhz SDRAM ECC unbuffered DIMMS which can be added one by one. It doesn't have to be HP memory but for the server to work, but it does need to be the same specs.

Re: Netserver E60 memory problem

I think that the older E60's only allowed up to 512MB Memory whereas the newer ones (I'm unsure of the dates) allowed up to 1Gb.

If you look at the manuals, product spec sheets, etc on the HP support site: this reflects this to an extent, and also in the maximum CPU setting.

If you look at the text on the motherboard where the Switches are for CPU setting, if it only goes up to 500Mhz then I think max memory is 512MB. Try without the original 128's in there.

I'm running mine with 64MB @ PC100, 128MB @ PC100 and stuck a 256MB @ PC133 in yesterday (non-HP) and it worked - no problems although it only showed up in the POST boot screen, not the memory test... must investigage but am going to flash bios when I have a free moment.

Hope that helps,

Regards,

Andrew

Re: Netserver E60 memory problem

I take that back a little... It DID work fine, but however as soon as I try installing NT 5.0 onto the server, no go... of course Dos was on there before and it can only handle 64MB Ram, so whichever fool put 192MB in before I got the server and was using Dos with it was mad also.
Apologies
