NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

I would like to configure the disk array and reload NT 4.0 on some NetServer LH Plus boxes.
I have a Navigator CD G.01.20 that is happy
with the hardware. I have used the drivers
from the Navigator CD to install NT.
I need some advice on how to configure the
drives.

Drives 1,2,3,4 are 4 gig. each
Drives 5,6 are 9 gig each.

I would like to set up 2 logical RAID0 drives

1,2,3,4 -> 16 gig logical drive.
5,6 -> 18 gig logical drive.

I have heard that ctrl-M will get into
a disk array config, but cannot get this to
work.

Thank you for any advice.

Re: NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

Craig,

Ctrl-M is for the "newer" netraid cards. If you have one, you will have the ctrl-M option on POST. You probably have an older Mylex card in which you will need to use the Navigator CD and boot to that to set up the array. I believe it is in tools and then more tools if memory serves correct. Then you can choose jetset utility.

You can also download it here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?locale=en_US&pnameOID=15593&taskId=135&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=62431&submit.y=0&submit.x=0〈=en&cc=us&y=0&x=0

This is the link for the HPDA PCI card, if you have an EISA card, just search for drivers for HPDA on the hp website.

Hope this helps.

P.S.
Your usable space will be 12GB and 9GB if you configure for redundancy with RAID 5 with 4gb hdds and RAID 1 with the two 9's

Re: NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

Greg,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I have downloaded the JetSet tools from HP.
I try something like this:
Netserver Utilities:
Disk Array Utilities:
Array Selection:
Array Controller in PCI Adapter, Channel0
(All 6 drives are shown)
Set Stripe Depth
Tools/Logical/Rebuild Priority

Then a message is shown
Dissimilar Disks

I haven't found anything else to try.

Re: NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

Craig,

If in fact you do have the HPDA controller, then the disks are in fact different. That old controller requires the disks be exactly the same. That Mylex controller is the only HP RAID controller that requires all drives be the same size, exactly or they will not work. And it may not recognize non-HP drives. see our tech support section at http://www.e4servicesinc.com/netraidsupport.html for more information.

Re: NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

Craig,
Try to do the jetset setup with only the 4gb hdds installed and see if it lets you create a raid 5 with those hdds. repeat the same process witht he two 9gb hdds. Are all of the 4gb hdds the same part number?

Re: NetServer LH Plus Raid config?

I have such a config on my LH Plus under NW 4, in fact the set of 6 drives is seen as *one* array with the default cable routing and the software will do nothing about that: any setup different from all identical drives will give the message you have.

You want *two* separate arrays, and for that you need to rearrange the cables (there are two channels on the Mylex RAID card), in my setup I split the 3 drives from top into one arry and the 3 from bottom into an other one. For that I had to borrow some cables to an other machine, so please check, but as I did this in year 2000 I do not remember all the lengths and so on needed.

Please also thing that on this model the controller insists on having all the drives in SE (single-ended) mode; HP drives with correct P/N are configured this way, for others (Seagate drives in my setup) you may have to add the jumper to force them to SE as they are most often shipped in LVD.
