I recently acquired a netserver E 60 and was planning on upgrading the processors and memory. The machine currently has a single PIII 600, and after doing some homework I found that the machine would be able to run two 700s, the problem is that the 700s I have found are a different voltage than the single 600 currently in the machine. Since the e60 motherboard has integrated vrm's will it be able to run different voltages with the same vrm? Further more could this machine operate with anything greater than 700s, I would not be asking, but since the E 60 originally had settings for up to 600 and now there are settings for up to 700 I am wondering if it could go higher.
Thanks

Re: Processors for netserver E 60
If there are not dip switches or bios configuration on the board for this, you should not do it.
If it handles multiple processors, much better to just add another 600 P3 processor. This will enable you to run the Linux smp kernel for example which boosts kernel performance 60% all other things being equal.
Most of these mother boards support a limited number of processor types. Go beyond that and you will have a non-working or unreliable server.

Re: Processors for netserver E 60
After 600, Intel went to the E series that returned the cache to 256. As for settings, the ChipSet is what controls what CPUs are supported. Not just switches.
The only Netserver that used the E series PIIIs were the LP series.
So 600 max

SolutionThere are DIP switches on the board for CPU Frequency and here is a link to the settings:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=tis04860
You'll need to scroll down to the E60. It shows DIP Switch setting for up to 700MHz but I have been unable to find any parts information listing a 700MHz Processor but have found conflicting information as to the highest supported configuration. I did find a part number for the 650MHz CPU: P1134-63001
Hope this is helpful,
