replacing hdd

Hello!

I have lh 6000 u3 with hdds on built in.
Hot spare hdd become dead and I removed it, but I didn't change configuration. During server reboot I said controller ignore lack of drive.
Today I'll receive drive replacement.

Do I need to do something with drive (for instance format it) or I need only to insert it? :-)

Re: replacing hdd

hi
if the hdd was a hot spare you only need to put it inside , start netraid assistant or express tool , you will see it as ready, just declare it as a hot spare.

Re: replacing hdd

But it is already declared as hot spare- I didn't change raid config at all. Does it mean I need only to insert it. I ask this question becuase I can down server only in night... And I run Linux on it, so I need to reboot server to have access to raid configuration...

Re: replacing hdd

hi usualy if a hdd fail, it is marked as failed,(same is you remove it).
if the new hdd is inserted in the place of a failed hdd, the system recognize it as a new hdd an mark it as ready (because the new hdd ha no config on it).
what you have to do is to change the status of "Ready" to "Hot spare", this can be done only by hand, there is no automatic rebuild as in a hdd part of a raid.
So probably you need to stop your system, run express tool and make your hdd hotspare, another way is to find MegaMgr for linux which let you use an interface similar to express tools under linux

Re: replacing hdd

Oh, sorry!

I forget to say that controller didn't recognized that drive is dead, so I simply
remove it.
When machine boots it said that drive is not responds (yes :-) , because there is no drive),
so I allowed controller to continue boot without changing configuration...
Now I see in configuration that drive is online, but there is no drive.
This is why I ask this question- I don't
know can I insert drive or I have to do some configuration. And I need mininal down time.

About MegaMgr (DellMgr):
It is not completely compatible with HP controllers. For intstance, I can't run logical drive check from it.
So, I'm afraid to run MegaMgr on production system.

Thank you!

Re: replacing hdd

Just to clarify when marino said:

When a hotspare fails, it goes into READY status since it wasn't part of an array.

When a drive that is part of an array fails, it goes into FAILD status.

So, when you get the replacement hard drive, you will have to manually configure the drive as a hot spare again since the drive will probably be in READY status.

What NOS are you running?

HP does have NetRAID tools for Windows & Netware (NetRAID Assistant for Windows, Megamanager for NetWare).

To download the NetRAID Utility for For the integrated NR controller on the LH6000, go to:

Re: replacing hdd

As I wrote, controller thinks that all is OK with drive...

Re: replacing hdd

hi
sorry for delay.
unfortunately I couldn't confirm you the exact way hout to a hotspare failure is managed.
I could suggest you to remove the hot spare from express tool (fail drive) and reassign hdd as hot spare, in this way you would have the config rewrited
