Tape Drive Not Responding

I have an HP Netserver e800 with Windows 2000 SBS installed. I am using ARCServe to backup. The tape drive will stop responding intermittantly. It is if the Tape Drive has lost power. There are no lights on front and you cannot eject the tape. When you totally power down and restart it returns to functionality. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Tape Drive Not Responding

Randy,
which SCSI controller is resides at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50063.html ?
Install HP LTT from http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html and analyze drive. Generate support ticket and attach to your next reply (rename it to .txt before attaching)

Re: Tape Drive Not Responding

The SCSI device is a Symbios Logic 896, 22910 PCI SCSI Adapter.

I updated the firmware using the LTT utility.

Attached is the support ticket.

THANKS!!

Re: Tape Drive Not Responding

Support ticket you attached is corrupt. But anyway, I see that there're 2 LVD hard drives on the same bus. As soon as DAT device has SE interface, whole bus works in SE mode, impacting perfomance (and maybe reliability).
I suggest to install HP recommended HBA and move drive there http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50063.html

Re: Tape Drive Not Responding

Brychkov is right, put the tape drive on its own SCSI controller if you can. An Adaptec 29160 would be a good solution. The HP part number for this controller is C7474A.

Other recommendations:

1. Check in Windows 2000 services for RSM (Removable Storage Manager). Stop this service if it is running, and set it to Manual to prevent it from starting up. RSM should not be running when any other backup software program is being used.
2. Run all the tests in L&TT. Any errors?
