Ultra3 Scsi2
My company has a lot of Hp Netservers. I tried to upgrade one of the Hp Netserver LH 6000r to Ultra3. I used HP Netraid-2m Ultra3 Card. First, I upgraded all of the firmware(BIOS, Backplane, Netraid-2m Bios,...) in my Netserver by using HP Navigator Cd. I used Ultra3 twisted scsi cable, Hp Ultra3 10K 36.4 Gb Scsi disk but Netraid Express Tools shows my system like Scsi2. I tried also HP Netraid 4-M. I tested my system. I copied 2gb file from one disk to another. I noted the time. I did same thing for Netraid-2m and HP Integrated Ultra2 I/O in my system. I got the same results and I decided that my system works like scsi2. I am in contact with HP local center. This tests and configurations took my 2 week and there is no result yet. Thanks in advance for your advices...
Sincerely yours

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
The LH6000 had both an Ultra2 and Ultra3 integrated controller depending on which revision you bought. What is the model number? Regardless of which version you have both were U3 capable. The SCSI hotswap backplanes are U3 capable. With Twisted Pair cabling, U3 hdds and either the NetRaid 2m or 4m you have a U3 system. What driver are you using?

Greg

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
My Netserver model is D9108A. I asked and learned that its internal I/O Board is Ultra2 because of that I decided to use an external Ultra3 Netraid controller like Netraid-2m. as you can see from the below
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=lpn14055
there is something wrong about Hp Netraid cards I guess. About the drivers you asked I can say that I see my disk speeds as scsi2 from netraid express tool before installing windows 2000. Also, I installed Windows 2000+Sp3 and latest Netraid 2-m Windows 2000 Driver from hp web site and when I checked the hdd properties from Netraid Assistant and I saw that they are seen as Scsi2. Thanks in advance

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
not going to discus on the speed test you did after upgrading to U3 but pls don't be confused by the fact the different locations where you can view the SCSI properties show you SCSI-2, here is why :
The indication of SCSI-2 does not mean the drive is Ultra-2, it can be aswell operating at Ultra3 or even Ultra SCSI speed. Their is a difference in a disk being compliant to the standard "ANSI SCSI-2" and it's capable speed on the bus which can be Ultra, Ultra-2 and Ultra-3, soon we'll have Ultra4 and this still will adhere to the same SCSI-2 spec's.
Some controllers use the ANSI SCSI information and some don't and the SCSI-2 indication is telling us what command set features this disk supports and not it's speed specification.
see also the original question where i posted this info before at :

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
Thanks for your response. I think, I fully understand your explanation but the problem here is if the my Netraid-2m controller negotiate with my Ultra3 Scsi disks by using SCSI2 command set features that means it will communicate with the Ultra3 disks by using SCSI2 command sets and to support Ultra3 speed you need SCSI3 command sets like double transation(DT).
Am I wrong, thanks...

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
the reason why the disks are still reporting SCSI-2 is for backwards compatibility with older adapters and tools. It does not mean they do not use or understand the SCSI-3 commands.
You can find the exact same U3 disks from the OEM vendor (i.e. Seagate, IBM) that do show SCSI-3 in the properties but HP customizes the disk F/W at a number of levels , one of them is this SCSI-2/SCSI-3 identification.

Re: Ultra3 Scsi2
Thanks for your explanation again. I really do not understand that if the everything is U3 (Netraid-2m, Disks, Cable, cage...) why I still see SCSI2. I have nothing in my system that is not U3 capable. There is no old adapter, disk or something else. Okay, lets forget SCSI terms, I need your help at another subject. I want to test all of my system and I want to learn that if it works as u3 or not. I did a simple test as you can see from my first question, I copied 2 gb data from one u3 disk to another u3 disk and I repeated the same test at an u2 system and I saw that results are the same. If you think these kind of tests are not logical, please give me some information about test programs that test the system correctly.
