Re: Networking between 2 pc's

Hello Sanjay,

My answer assumes that you just want to share resources within your LAN, that is, between your laptop and Home PC. If you are trying to connect your Home PC to the Office PC, then please, let us know what do you want to do?

Thanks again.

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

Friends, the request is still the same with one slight modification as detailed in the attached snapshot. Yesterday night, I was again trying to setup this but found some issues which, after confirming, I'll mention here. -Sanjay

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

OK Sanjay,

In both scenarios, you'll need to configure P2P networking.
Firstly, to connect the Laptop and the Home PC. The P2P networking configuration will use only the NIC at both ends. So I don't think that you need to change any configuration with the Dialup. The Dialup will use the setting of the Modem. Unless your TCP/IP is conflicting between your LAN and Dialup. Then you can use this to switch between the two TCP/IP settings:

This has been posted buy one of the forumers but I found it interesting to try.

Also, I would get a Hub or switch instead of a crossover cable.
As far as Scenario (2). I would share the resources at the laptop and access it from my Home PC which will be easier and cheaper.

Don't we deserve some points.
Thanks and good luck.

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

Sanjay.. It wasn't clear to me if you had tried adding NetBEUI to both systems, along with an LMHOSTS file on each, and what the outcome was.

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

Hello !
Let me notice that IP address dosn't belong to entire computer. IP addresses assigns to every network interface separately. According your picture Laptop has two network interfaces, one for dial-up connection and one (NIC) to connect to Home PC. Dial-up interface (primary) gets IP address from DHCP (got 20.76.174.211 in your picture). Secondary network interface doesn't have an IP address because it doesnt connected to a DHCP server. So you need assign IP address manually (static IP). As far as your Home PC has 192.168.1.1 address, you need to assign address to secondary interface on laptop from the same subnet with the same subnet mask as your Home PC (i.e. from 192.168.1.0 subnet ). Suppose Home PC has netmask 255.255.255.0. So you can assign IP address 192.168.1.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0 to you laptop's secondary NIC. After that, if no probs with crossover cable, you should be able to ping Home PC's IP from laptop, and laptop's secondary IP(192.168.1.2) from Home PC. If pings are going well - everithing ok with connection between Home PC and laptop. Install "Client for Microsoft Network" and "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks" on both machines to be able to get access to their resources.
Also it's possible to get access from Home PC to Office PC via laptop using this scheme, but it's quite different story. =)

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

- Roger, Thanks for the fanstastic sites. I'm browsing through that.
- Jon, Yes, I've added NetBEUI protocol but haven't modified any entry in the lmhosts file.
- Artyom, You're right in saying that the laptop's IP add. is assigned dynamically using the dial-up connection.

At this stage, I'm doing further R&D into this and if successful, will update again.
fyi only - the browsing is ok between the laptop and home pc so far after setting the same domain/workgroup name & checking "IP assign automatically". The challenge is still there.

Re: Networking between 2 pc's

Hi Friends,
Yes, I manage to setup the network as per the requirement in the attached doc. The process was straight forward:
(a) Install NetBEUI protocol
(b) Cross cable
All done. I was able to browse my home desktop when at the same time connected to office N/k.
Thanks again for your support.
