11i Install issue

Hi,

Iam currently trying to reinstall a new OS (11i) on an existing system (11.00) that is no longer in use. I have done this numerous times in the past and never had any problems however on this occasion upon interrupting the boot process the following happens:

NB: According to the ioscan the hardware path on which the cd-rom resides is P15, however its description is 'Random Access Media'.

P0 Random Access Media
P1 Random Access Media
P2

P16 LAN Module

Main Menu: Enter Command > Bo P15
Interact with IPL > N
Booting.....

Cannot find ENTRY_TEST.

FAILED to initialize

ENTRY_INIT
Status = -4

Failed to initialise

Main Menu: Enter comment >

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I have already tried a few different cd's but alway get the same result.

Re: 11i Install issue

instead of running "search" try "sea ipl". This will find only devices with an IPL, and that are therefore bootable. This should narrow down your search.

Re: 11i Install issue

"Status = -4" indicates a hardware failure to read from the cdrom.

"Random Access Media" is normal output. Tape devices are considered sequential access and disks (including cdrom) are called random access.

3rd party cdroms won't be able to read the cd properly. If this drive was supplied by HP, you will need to have it checked out.

Re: 11i Install issue

Hi,

I am not installing from an ignite server, ignite is not installed on the box at all.

I searched for "sea ipl" this time as opposed to simply "sea" and there was a significant difference listing only the following:

P0 Randon Access Media
IPL
P1
Can I assume from this that there is definately a hardware issue with the cd-rom?

Re: 11i Install issue

Hello Dermot,

It seems like you are definitely experiencing a hardware problem. If the 11.0 version is still operational, you might consider booting into that 0.S. and try mounting the cdrom just to determine if you can mount it and read the data. The Random Access Media description is normal.

Re: 11i Install issue

Dermot,

As Cheryl pointed out, and as SK implied, it looks like you're getting an i/o error from the CDROM. Double-check the disk. Will it boot on another machine? Which CD are you using? What else is on the bus with this CD? Will a different CD (maybe an 11.0 install/core o/s CD) boot from this drive?

Trying these might give you a clearer picture of where the problem is.

Best Regards,

Re: 11i Install issue

Hi,

Suspecting a faulty cdrom, I have taken your advise about booting into the old OS and attempting to mount the cdrom from there, however here is where I encounter another issue. It appears the boot disk is also corrupt. It simply will not boot up all, not even from the ISL. I have tried rebooting using several different options including "ISL> hpux /stand/vmunix(.prev)". It also refuses to boot into single-user mode or maintenance mode (hpux -lm).

I am currently searching for an external cdrom to boot from, any alternative suggestions are more than welcome.
