8 Character hostname limit

Is there a fix/patch for the limit of 8 characters for the hostname/nodename for hpux 11.23?

Thanks

Hi Robert:

You need to install an optional enhancement bundle:

Patch PHCO_32474 is also applicable.

Re: 8 Character hostname limit

Check the man page for hostname:

"The name_of_host argument is restricted to MAXHOSTNAMELEN characters as defined in ."

# grep MAXHOSTNAMELEN /usr/include/sys/param.h
#define MAXHOSTNAMELEN 64 /* max length of hostname */

Re: 8 Character hostname limit

Shalom Robert,

You can't do this on any other systems other than 11.23. I don't think its going to be offered for older versions.

This adds functionality that Linux has had for years, but it will make these systems different than other HP-UX systems.

I had to dump the name jerusalem when naming a server a few years back because it was one character too long.

That's okay, living there is better than naming a server after it.

:-)

Please consider also pro & cons to have a hostname longer than 8 character.
Me too I had this problem.

Re: 8 Character hostname limit

Hi (again):

The caveats and patches required by other products are well documented in the overview brief:
