add printer into spooler

I got a new Epson printer and would like to add into my UX server. I added the IP and print queue name into /etc/host then use jetadmin to add the printer into local spooler. ( the jetadmin is not HP product )

But thee is error message shown. Please see the attachement.

Can anyone advise how can I fix it ?

best regards,
Cat

Re: add printer into spooler

Hi,

I am not familar with Epson printers but as I understand it is a network printer, not a local connected. Have you checked the manuals for the printer, which methods does it support. Is there support for "lpd" (it is common). If so, try to configyre it as a remote printer and select "Printer is on a BSD system" (if you use sam) or "-ob3" (if you use lpadmin).

Re: add printer into spooler

Hi there.

Can you switch the printer to HP laserjet mode ?

How did you connect the printer ?
- LPT1 cable
- RJ45 cable
- USB cable

If you have an Ethernet interface in the printer, make sure, that it can communicate with your computer ( best would be a HP interface ).

Pls give us a few more deatils.

Re: add printer into spooler

Since the Epson printer is not connected to the network with an HP JetDirect card or external adapter, you cannot use jetadmin of hppi to add the printer (in SAM, the term is "network printer"). You must add the printer as a "remote printer" in SAM. NOTE: as mentioned numerous times here in the forums, a remote printer in HP-UX will have no formatting controls (the -o options) unless the remote printer is controlled by another HP-UX system. You'll have to use the ux2dos program to pre-format plain ASCII files.

Re: add printer into spooler

A non-GUI alternative to SAM is the lpadmin command. It can help avoid the bandwith and TERM challenges if doing this remotely.
