Adding network printer in other network

Hi everyone,

On a HPUX 10.2 machine, I am trying to add a network printer in a different network. My belief was all I needed was an IP address, but in going through JetDirect, it complains about being able to find a GET community name. Does this make sense?

I can add a network printer in my subnet with no issues, but I am having trouble with the other subnet.

Is this an HPUX issue or something on the printer?

Thanks everyone.

I believe that this is a snmp issue and in my experience has not affected the IP printing process

Re: Adding network printer in other network

It is very likely a router/firewall problem. Start with a ping from your computer to the printer. If that fails, talk to your networking administrators. Then if hppi cannot add the printer, it is likely due to some of the required ports not being allowed through the router. JetDirect uses port 9100 and hppi will try to use SNMP to query the remtote printer. Use the addqueue command to add the printer.

In addition to the replies you already have, I'd hold down the Test button for a few seconds on the JetDirect to get a printout of the current settings of the JetDirect box!

Re: Adding network printer in other network

Hi Dan

bootp daemon does not pass through routers. So suggest following to configure Network printer in different network:

1. Set IP , gateway etc on the printer either manually or through Jetadmin utility in the network where the printer is located.

2. From hp-ux server, ping to printer. Once this is OK , just add a new printer queue with its IP address and name

Re: Adding network printer in other network

A colleague had this issue and he solved it on router configuration.

Note that if you can't ping printer problem is on network layer.
