with a nonrecovered error condition that was probably caused by a

may also be returned if the device is unable to distinguish between a
flaw in the medium and a specific hardware failure (sense key 0x04).

The combination of Additional Sense Code and Sense Qualifier (0x3B00)
indicates: Sequential positioning error.

If u see the description of error. It says hardware failure. Now, i did an lssf to check that partiicular tape path. I got this

(h8193n3)root# lssf /dev/diag/rmt/c4t5d0
tape2 card instance 4 SCSI target 5 SCSI LUN 0 transparent at address 10/4/8.5.0
/dev/diag/rmt/c4t5d0
(h8193n3)root# lssf /dev/rmt/c15t0d1BEST
stape card instance 15 SCSI target 0 SCSI LUN 1 at&t best density available at a
ddress 12/0/1/0.1.5.255.0.0.1 /dev/rmt/c15t0d1BEST
(h8193n3)root# lssf /dev/rmt/1mb
tape2 card instance 4 SCSI target 5 SCSI LUN 0 berkeley best density available a
t address 10/4/8.5.0 /dev/rmt/1mb

Now, if u see the /dev/diag/rmt/c4t5d0
tape2 u see 5 SCSI LUN 0 transparent at address 10/4/8.5.0. But others say 5 SCSI LUN 0 berkeley best density available a
t address 10/4/8.5.0 /dev/rmt/1mb. Does that show as a problem.
What else can i do to check to make sure there is an error. This message came 1 week ago also, but it kept working.
Thanks.

Re: backup error

lssf is meaningless as a diagnostic tool. Essentially hardware failures have been detected on this drive. You should 1) clean the tape drive 2) use new media. If problems still persist then replace the drive.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: backup error

Could be bad tapes or faulty hardware.

Clean the tape drive.

Change to new tapes.

If problem persists, get HP hardware involved.

Re: backup error

Run stm, select the tape drive, and run the exerciser. If that fails, you'll have log info to give to HP and they will be able to tell what needs replaced.

Re: backup error

Your DDS3 tape drive is having mechanical problems. Virtually all tape drives wear out after extended usage and must be replaced. The mechanics are extremely small and cannot be repaired. Now since this message was logged only once (and I assume that you have been regularly using the tape drive since then), this may be ignored *EXCEPT* you want to mark the tape that was recorded during this error. It may not be 100% useable.
