Re: backup software
HP OpenView Storage Data Protector is the backup software.
Yes Omniback and Data protector are the same. Until version 4.1 it was called OmniBack. From version 5.0 it is called Data protector.
We use Data protector to backup our databases, file systems and various applications on to Ultrium-LTO tapes and it works fine.

Re: backup software
HP Omniback earlier, now with new name Storage Data protector is matured backup software on HPUX env. Not only for HPUX it is meant for heterogenous environment backup management.
As compare to other Backup Management software, it is very user freindly.
It is having feature's of ONE BUTTON DISASTER RECOVERY(Windows), Online backup support for Oracle like RDBMS.
Just an example of HP-ISO company using Omniback, managing near 3000 users desktop and thousands of Servers.

Rajesh

Re: backup software
Omniback II 4.1 was the latest release of Omniback. The new version 5.0 was called Data Protector instead of Omniback.

Kurt

Re: backup software
Retention (some vendors uses the word Protection instead) is the time a backup is protected .
Data Protector uses two kinds of protection, Data and Catalog. Data protection is how long the media is protected from overwriting. Catalog protection is how long the information about the data on the media is keept in the database.
Expired protection does not mean that the data is unaviable. As long as the data is not overwritten, it is possible to retrive the data from the media (you may need to inport the data or catalog again).

Re: backup software
Dataprotector is the latest name for Omniback backup software marketed by Hewlett Packard. Latest version is 5.5 available for hp-ux and other OS platforms.
DP has been a stable product and reasinably priced.

The HP Storage Data protector is proven backup device. It can take backup from different operating systems like windows, Linux along with HP-UX. We have around 3500+ desktop/server with different OS which is been backed up by Data protector.

Re: backup software
Data protector is the new name for Omniback.
It is very popular on HP systems.
We also use backup software from Veritas (now symantec)
hope this helps too!

Re: backup software
Three main backup softwares used wordwide irrespective on platform are
1. HP's Data Protector (Old name Omniback)
2. IBM Tivoli
3. Veritas Netbackup (Now Symantec Netbackup as Symantec took over Veritas)
I suppose DP should be used maximum for HPUx systems. The main reason being from the same vendor.Still I only have working experience on Data Protector so can not really differentiate in the three. Still I think the functionality of the three should be similar only.

Devender
