Backup Strategy

Backup Strategy

I have a D320 HP server with HP-UX 10.2 and Oracle 8.0.5. The server is used as an information system for a steel manufacturing plant. My problem is that I do not have ANY downtime on the system to make an image backup. So far I've used Ignite-UX to make a recovery DAT for the operating system and each day I make a full Oracle export of all data in the database. I also backup applications developed in C. My problem is that I cannot make a full image backup(or I don't know how to do it without stopping the database or applications). The system has 3 X 4G.B drives without RAID. Can somebody please help me before I have a disaster on my hands ....

Re: Backup Strategy

The best solution would be using Omniback.
Or Ignite For root file ,and Fbackup for other filesystems .

Re: Backup Strategy

You could take a hot backup of oracle database files (after putting Oracle in the backup mode)

Re: Backup Strategy

Anthony,

What to do:
- You can use Omniback(OBII), to make Online Backups of your Oracle Database + Filesystems.

- Make a Ignite Tape.
When using OBII, make sure OBII is in /dev/vg00, so that when you need to recover from Ignite OBII can be restored aswell, via Ignite.

When making the Ignite Tape, Stop OBII.
So that the database file of OBII(/var/opt/omni/db) is backed-up in a good state.

If you want to read more about Omniback goto the following url:

Re: Backup Strategy

One thing you can look at is , if your logical volumes are mirrored you can split them ( lvsplit) and backup the split copy . However this does mean a little bit of down time i.e. stop database , split the LVs and then restart them ( say approx 5 mins , is this feasible)

SO they can continue working whilst the backup is running and once finished , your remerge the logical volume ( lvmerge)
