Re: Best Sys Admin book
Marty Poniatowski's "System Administration" books are good, though they might be a little simplistic for your needs. You might be better off with Rafeeq Rehman's "HP Certified" book. It's quite detailed and the only area it seems to be somewhat lacking in are networking (routing, subnetting and the like).

Re: Best Sys Admin book
also HPUX tuning and performance concept tools and methods by Robert F.Sauers and Peter S Weygant is very good.
To be honest all the hpbooks at prentice hall have proved to be very good for me.
also hpux 11i security by wong
:-)

Re: Best Sys Admin book
"The Magic Garden Explained" Goodheart and Cox
Prentice Hall
This book examines just a handful of topics, and is not HP/UX, but after reading, you'll truly understand the subject. This book is the route to true enlightenment, and by far my favorite tech book.
i.e. I never knew what STREAMS were doing until I read this. Now I'll never have another question.

Re: Best Sys Admin book
thnks much for all the valuable info you provided.
from all these replies, I have selected following two books,
1. HP Certified by Rafeeq Ur Rehman
2. HP-UX 11i System Administration Handbook and Toolkit by Marty Poniatowski
not very sure though if I made a good selection....
Now what I would like to know is if "HP Certified by Rafeeq Ur Rehman" is available for HP-UX 11i series? as some where in the forum I hv read that it is available for 10.20 only.
Kind Regds,
Qamar

Re: Best Sys Admin book
It doesn't cover the specifics of any particular technology, it covers the processes. It is at a higher level than day to day administration and covers bigger topics. There are tons of real world examples taken from the author's job experience. And every chapter includes a checklist type summary of things from the chapter that you should look at in your own environment.
The kind of topics it addresses are how do you design a service for performance and stability, how do you upgrade applications or services with minimum user impact, what strategies work best for handling network growth - stuff like that. There are even chapters on hiring and firing system administrators, how to handle your non-technical managers, tips for increasing job satisfaction, and so on.
While this certainly won't help you with your certification, it is fantastic at teaching you the kind of thing a senior admin or architect has to think about. When I went from the most junior member of an 8 person admin team to my next job as the more senior of just 2, it was invaluable in helping me adjust my thinking so I could see the big picture of what I had to do to manage my new Unix environment.

Re: Best Sys Admin book
If you havent already bought the books, check out half.com which is affiliated with ebay.com.
half.com sells used books and I found my HP-UX certification there for significantly less then what it was selling for new.
Best regards,
Kent M. Ostby
