Hi all,

I want to buy some book about administration HP. I found this one :

HP-UX 11i Systems Administration Handbook and Toolkit, Second Edition

What do you think about my choosing ? Or could you recommend me some, from your point of view, better ?

Thanks for your reply

Re: Book

RTFM (man pages are the best)
Seriously,I'd go to docs.hp.com for HP specific
as well as I go to Linux-HOWTOs for Linux specific.
Books are 2 heavy to carry as well. :)

Hi

I bought
HP-UX 11i System Administration Handbook and Toolkit
Marty Poniatowski

Found it to be a sound base.

The instant information CD you get is also a gold mine and ask lots of questions here

Re: Book

If you decide to buy the HP Certified book or the Poniatowski, and you dont mind buying a used version, check on Half.com.

There is a copy of the HP Certified book selling for $40 about $20 less then the discounted Amazon version.

And Poniatowski's books are 50% off out there.

Double check the revision that they are selling though as well.

Re: Book

Another very good free source is the HPUX software recovery handbook at http://www2.itrc.hp.com/service/iv/enterService.do?NODEID=English_SHW%3A%3ADE_SW_UX_swrec_EN_01_E%2FQ1

They are little 'white papers' on different areas of HPUX systems administration that HP engineers write and post. They are very good papers, and you will find them straightforward and easy to read.

Hope it helps

Hi:

HP's documents in /usr/share/doc has very good documents and Postscripts that you can find. And always "man" is your best friend.

Re: Book

Hi,

thanks to everyone to suggestion.

From my point of view, I need handbook. The book, where are commands with short explanation. It seems to me the best solution will be "HP-UX 11i Systems Administration Handbook and Toolkit, Second Edition"

John : unfortunately your link doesn't work. Probably, I don't have permission to go to the link.

Re: Book

Hi,

As a good reference I tend to use Unix in a Nutshell - O'Reilly & Associates. As well as Essential System Administration (another O'Reilly one)

Re: Book

Oops. Sorry. You are using the 'other' ITRC. I am in North America. Try searching the ITRC for 'software recovery handbook' or look in the knowledge trees area of the ITRC. It is area. (I see it just below the link for the FAQ's.)

Just a note, HP decided to remove all the white papers out of /usr/share/doc in HPUX 11i. You have to either get them off of HPUX 11.0 machine or search docs.hp.com and cross your fingers. I personally downloaded the files for safekeeping to a local machine...

Hope it helps

Re: Book

If you are new to Unix I would recommend
"The Complete Idiot's Guid to Unix" by Wagner
This book is great because it's not dry and technical... it's technical... but very easy to read.

If you're experienced using unix I'd agree with some of the other choices others have mentioned above.
