Can machine be accessed without console?
I started the machine running Unix 11.0 and the machine is not connected to
the monitor(console). I tried to connect to the machine thru NT workstation
using telnet. But is gives message that host not found. Does this mean that
someone has to log into the console and then only it can be accessed by the
telnet.
Please clearify.

Re: Can machine be accessed without console?
indicates one of the following:
1) There is no network connectivity between the NT box and the HP-UX box.
2) The IP address you are telnetting to from the NT box is not the IP address
of the HP-UX box
3) Network services on the NT box isn't up (the inetd process)
4) Network services isn't configured to run telnet (/etc/inetd.conf configures
the inetd process)
5) inetd security isn't allowing telnet from the NT box (/var/adm/inetd.sec)
Run through the above and see if any are true.

Re: Can machine be accessed without console?
Let me tell you what actually happened. Unix machine was running, the
console(monitor) was also up, i was connected from the NT workstation using
telnet to the unix box. All of sudden due some reason the console died and it
never came up. I was able to connect to the machine thru telnet from NT
workstation. After two days i thought to restart the unix machine, so i gave
the command shutdown -r from the telnet. The unix box went down and restarted.
There after i am not able to connect to the unix box thru telnet. The monitor
connected to the unix box is dead now, so there is no way to check the files
you referred. I think since i was able to connect using telnet from same NT
workstation which i using now to connect basically all the services on NT
should be running.
There is no change in the network or the ip address.
Is it possible to connect to the unix machine other than console -- one i know
is telnet or any another please reply.

Re: Can machine be accessed without console?
was fine.
I would suggest you try other accesses to the machine
ftp, rlogin, xwindows (if you have it. If these
work it would give you some idea that the machine is
up.
Also you can download a terminal emulator and connect
the NT up as a console thru the serial port.
I have a MAC as my console.
It may be that your reboot is halted, and none of the
network deamons are started yet. If this is the case
your only option is the console access (that I know of).

Re: Can machine be accessed without console?
If I turn off the power and turn it on back, still all(network) daemons
won't start. I have already tried to ftp, since it is not able to ping ftp does
not work. I turned off/on the power still it does not work.

Re: Can machine be accessed without console?
that the system requires a console to boot! one of the startup sequence steps
is to test the terminal/system console before proceeding.
You could probably get away with connecting a PC to the RS-232C and use the
terminal emulation software -ensure that you have the following set
Stop Bits: 1
Baud Rate: 9600 bps
Parity/Data Bits: 0's/7
Enq/Ack: NO
Pace: XON/XOFF
(Handshake)
Hope this helps,
Good luck.
