Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

I am in SAM on our test server.

I went to LP Spooler, Printers and Plotters,
Add network based printer.

The only option is to add a printer using HP JetDirect.

I went into Jetdirect to add the printer to the local spooler and it is asking for the IP Address.

I put in the IP address and HP Jetdirect is saying that it is not a network printer -- it cannot ping the printer.

I can open a telnet window on the same hp server and ping the printer successfully.

Thanks
Angie

In HP-UX speak, a "Network" printer is an HP JetDirect direct device using (by default) port 9100. This will not work with other network printers unless they support the JetDirect protocol. Under Printers and Plotters -> Actions, you need to use the "Add Remote Printer" option. This will create a queue that supports the lpr/lpd protocol.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Thank you.
I am trying to set it up as a remote printer
and it is asking for a remote system name.
Do you know what to use for the remote system name?

it is a wireless printer. I can ping the IP address of the printer.

Add the entry in /etc/hosts file

ip_address_of_printer remote_printer

Now use remote_printer as remote host name.

Re: Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

The host name will be whatever you like. You need to create a DNS or /etc/hosts entry for your Zebra printer. You will also need to know the "printer" (or queue) name on the remote host. Your Zebra documentation should help you with this.

You might have a hostname of "zebra1" and a printer name of "RAW".
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

thank you.
I have another note from the HP forum about Zebra printers that says to check "Remote Printer is on a BSD System"

Do you know if that should be checked?

Also - do you know what to put for Remote Cancel Model or remote status model?

Thank you!!!!

Re: Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

I have setup the printer as a remote print in SAM. I can ping the printer ip and the host name that i configured in /etc/hosts.

However, when I do an lpstat, I am getting
"Connection to ZEBRA1 is down"

Re: Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

Angie,
Try enabling the printer id on the ux system.
we have a number of zebras on our system:
remote system name = ip address
remote system name = name of port eg /prt0 (if cabled to single data port)or /par2 (if in second port of network adapter)
remote printer is BSD = yes
remote cancel= default(rcmodel)
remote status= default(rsmodel)

Hope this is of some help

Re: Can someone help me setup a Zebra bar code printer?

All remote printers must have a remote printer name. This is stored inside the printer's LAN card. Some LAN cards call the printer prn or text or raw, etc. This is only documented from the manufacturer of the LAN card. The remote printer name is part of the remote printing protocol. If this were a server with several printers, you would have to specify which one you wanted to use. The Zebra is no different, and the same is true for any printer with a LAN card using remote printing.
