cannot allocate pty

I'm getting the above message when I'm trying to open new sessions on a L-Class running 11i

I have increased the npty setting from with in sam and also used the lnsf -d pty -n 1500 command to build the device files but I'm still getting the same error?

Re: cannot allocate pty

This can be the result of other problems too. Or at least it can be the first thing you notice when, for example, the machine can't fork because of virtual memory issues.

If you are sure that you have set sufficient number of pty's I would have a lose look at the syslog to see if there are any other issue that might e causing this problem.

Re: cannot allocate pty

1. Makle sure u have enough pseudo terminal device files; if not increase it from sam
2. Make sure u r not running out of memory

Re: cannot allocate pty

swapinfo looks ok
and I can't find any errors in the syslog.

I've also performed the insf command on nstrpty but still no luck

Re: cannot allocate pty

I am making a wild guess ....

There is something called a ptydaemon which is started by the RC script ! Is that running ?.

Check /sbin/rc?.d directories for a script that starts this daemon

Re: cannot allocate pty

Martin,

If you have Glance, take a look at the "System Tables Report". It will (probably) pinpoint exactly which resource you're running out of. (It definitely will show you npty!).

Re: cannot allocate pty

Glance is not showing that I'm running out of anything. Its says i'm not using any npty sessions?

Re: cannot allocate pty

Martin,

what network service are you using to connect to HP-UX box? telnet, rlogin, both, whichever?
