Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

Hi all,

Have an issue at a client on a HP-UX 11i v.1 server since they loaded the December 2003 QPK. The install went haywire and was unfortunately aborted. First off, SAM would not work, giving the error (samlog) below at SAM STARTUP:

I found the SAM disk thread (http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/ciss/doLogin.do?TargetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fforums1.itrc.hp.com%2Fservice%2Fforums%2FpostQuestion.do%3FfamilyId%3D117%26forumId%3D1)

and noticed that many of the products were in "installed" state rather than "configured". We then tried the swconfig \* -> it failed with multiple errors -> see attached file.

I managed to get SAM running by doing a swconfig SystemAdmin, but when one quits SAM, it asks to regen the kernel, the mk_kernel errors out with the following:

Cannot build a kernel using /usr/sbin/config. The standard output of the command is shown below:
Unsatisfied symbol "create_ip6_devfile" in file /usr/conf/lib/libnet.a[stcpmap.o] 1 errors.
Stop config: make did an exit(1) The command exitted with exitcode -71.

Now, the fact that we cannot do a swconfig, what are my options? Deinstall what is installed and try again? I found another thread that said a GSP reset would help (????) - I tried it anyway to no avail.

Your input would be most welcome,

MND

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

THis is a known bug

The problem is with the ARPA Transport patch
PHNE_27063.

A re-installation of this patch should solve the problem.

Hi Marc,

We had the same problem on a test server. We put back an ignote tape and resinstalled using the option only select software that is applicable for the software on this target. Sorrie

Robert,

I cannot follow that thread, java error on page, whats it about? I get nothing when searching for create_ip6_devfile.

Will the ARPA patch reload help me with this swconfig /* error? I noticed that from the swlist with the -state switch before the swconfig and after thae number of installed vs configured dropped from 242 to 26.

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

Yes,you are right the bundle contains only few filesets of that patch.

Download that patch and do a re-install of that patch. That should fix it.

The problem you are facing is that stcpmap.o is not found with the filesets of that patch installed with the bundle as the bundle has only few filesets of that patch.

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

TJ,

Just FYI

Warning: 03/10/06 - This Critical Warning has been issued by HP.

- PHNE_27063 introduced behavior that can result in certain
applications failing due to network traffic created by
worms such as "Blaster" or "W32.Blaster.worm" as described
in HP Security Bulletin HPSBUX0309-276. Please refer to
the HP Security Bulletin for additional information.
- The same behavior is experienced with superseding patches
PHNE_28089 and PHNE_28895.
use PHNE_29887

The fix is to install the patch

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

Robert-Jan and TG, thanks for all the info - I have a slow line so this may take a while.

I will get this done and try the swconfig \* - just worried that as the patch install aborted, my client should probably reload the GOLDQPK.

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

Morning all,

Ok, was not as simple as I thought - this patch had a dependancy on another and that patch needed to regen the kernel which this patch was fixing - catch 22! We are down to 11 products in the installed state, but getting there.

Thanks for all the help TG and Robert-Jan - invaluable.

Case closed.

Re: Cannot make kernel after December 2003 patch load.

We now loaded the patches on the OTHER server and the load failed - the system is completely corrupt again.

Interesting that the output of swlist confirms that there are 2 different bundles, due to B.11.11 and 11i v1 patch naming convention:

GOLDAPPS11i B.11.11.0212.4 Gold Applications Patches for HP-UX 11i, December 2002
GOLDAPPS11i B.11.11.0312.4 Gold Applications Patches for HP-UX 11i v1, December 2003
GOLDBASE11i B.11.11.0212.4 Gold Base Patches for HP-UX 11i, December 2002
GOLDBASE11i B.11.11.0312.4 Gold Base Patches for HP-UX 11i v1, December 2003

Is there any known bug in the Dec 2003 patches for 11i v1?

Thanks,

MND
