CDE - protocol dependencies

All this time, I thought CDE relied on telnet to connect to a given server. We have a server that now prohibits telnet connections by root, or so I'm told, but I am able to connect to it using this id. This begs the question, can someone describe the protocol dependencies of CDE?

Actually, I believe CDE uses XDMCP - X Display Manager Control Protocol.
