cifs and program hangs

I have a program written in COBOL and as it opens output to a cifsmounted share the program "HANGS" at the open statement. cifs is at the A.01.01 level for client and daemon. NO file locks are used in the program. The share is visible to the user and a touch foo does create a file. Any Ideas ??
