Cold Installation

I just purchased a used HP 9000 Unix Server along with DDS tapes containing HP-UX 10. The SCSI drive on the server is completely blank. How do I go about installing the OS? I am very new to Unix and need all the help I can get.

Thank you

Re: Cold Installation

Tom,
Insert the boot/install tape, and power on the system. Interrupt the boot sequence when the message appears, something like "press any key to interrupt boot sequence".
You should get a menu. enter "help" to see all the commands. Type "SEA". This will search for boot devices - you should see in the list the tape device preceeded by an identifyer like "P0".
type "boot P0" (if P0 is the tape device, use whatever identifier is there for the tape device).
This will boot from the tape device. After a few minutes you should get a menu that has the option of installing HPUX. As a note, the tape MUST be a bootable tape.
Good luck

Re: Cold Installation

You need to obtain an installation CD for the OS version you wish/have purchased.

Insert the disk in the CD-ROM/DvdD drive. Power the machine on.
When prompted, interrupt the boot sequence by "pressing any key within 10 seconds"
Search for a boot path by typing "se install"
Boot off of the path to your CD by typing "bo "
Follow menu prompts for basic OS installation.

Re: Cold Installation

Tom,
Insert the tape, and power on the system. Interrupt the boot sequence when you see the message to do so on the console (you will have 10 seconds). You will get a menu, and you can type "help" to see the menu options.
Type "SEA", this will search for bootable media, the tape device should show up with an identifier like "P0", or "P1". If the identifier is, say P0, then enter "boot P0". This will boot from the tape. After a few minutes you will see a menu that will have install HPUX as an option. Note, this tape must be bootable.
Good luck.

Re: Cold Installation

Okay, Sorry for the multiple responses, I kept getting error dumps when I submitted my responses.
