Configuring cluster for future nodes

We are looking at migrating our cluster servers from two L2000's to two RP3440's. I'm not sure when the RP's will be on site, so I was wondering if anyone had added two phantom servers to their cluster ascii file and run the cluster like that; then added the other nodes to the cluster at a later date.
I don't think cmapplyconf will allow it by default, but is there a way around it?

Re: Configuring cluster for future nodes

I don't think so that cmapplyconf will allow this since it does query all the nodes , so it will fail .

But however you can prepare all your ascii files ahead of time and when your two nodes arrive , you can apply them .

Re: Configuring cluster for future nodes

Hi Stuart,

Nop. When you do cmapplyconf it will check to make sure that all the nodes and their network/storage configurations are good.

So, for your question, the answer is no. It is not too difficult to add the systems into the cluster though.

Re: Configuring cluster for future nodes

you will not be able to add non-existant nodes into the clsuter, but you might consider these points.
A 2 node cluster needs a lock disk, or a quorum server.
aa 4 node cluster can use both, but more than four nodes cannot use a cluster lock disc, only a quorum server. You might want t o change to a Qurom Server (frreeeee product ) rather than a cluster lock disk.
If using shared SCSI storage, you need to plan for the SCSI id,s

Network planning is always a goood thing to prepare for, get your hostnames and ip addresses ready, and have DNS set up for these.

just a few thoughts

Re: Configuring cluster for future nodes

Melvyn,
I'm not planning on leaving all four nodes in the cluster. The two current nodes will be shutdown and removed from service.

Thanks to all for help confirming that the solution I proposed would not work.

Re: Configuring cluster for future nodes

Stuart,

As others have stated - you will have to wait to configure the new cluster binary.

You could manually prepare your ascii files.

I went through the same thing a year and a half a go - added 2 RP7410's into a 4 node cluster - making 6 in total, then dropping the 4 old ones and adding a cluster lock to the 2 new ones.

Make sure you are at 11.13 or higher of MC/SG....
