connection timed out

hi guys,
we have a RP7400 class server with a 10/100/1000 network card (p/n A4929A) the connection is loose. when we ping the server, it did respond but we got a lot of time out. At the cable and switch level there is no problem, cause we've done some troubleshooting. Could there be a special configuration for the lan card ?

Re: connection timed out

The config file for this card is;
/etc/rc.config.d/hpgelanconf

In it you should specify the speed (if your switch port is running 1000 [gigabit] then set your card to the same on the HP, and it should be set to Autonegotiation - as it should also be set on the switch). Its all in the config file - give it a read.

Re: connection timed out

You should have the following software installed also;

GigEther-00 B.11.11.14 PCI/HSC GigEther;Supptd HW=A4926A/A4929A/A4924A/A4925A

Re: connection timed out

what do you mean the connection is loose?

analyse it with lanadmin

Re: connection timed out

lets say this card is lan1

lanadmin -x lan1

Check that this is consistent with the switch settings.

If the switch is cisco and you are using auto negotiate, have switch admin had code your cards optimal switch settings instead of auto negotiate.

Boot your box, run the test again

lanadmin -x lan1

If the results are now inconsistent do the hpgelanconf recommendations above.

If they are good and the problem persists from another box, run a long, ping test.

If times vary widely, they should be more or less constant, run dmesg. If the ping times gradually increase, replace the NIC card its bad.

These recommendations are based on actual experience.

Re: connection timed out

Run a linkloop test on the circuit. IF that's good we can look at other layer 3 (networking problems) like soembody else with the same IP address. IF it fails then you know it is a driver/NIC/Cable/Switch issue.

Re: connection timed out

HI,

First you must know that
HP server can NOT attache direct to the other devices, like a Cisco router or other server or PC. You must
connect your (server) cables to the
hub or switch (network device). Also there is problem with some vendors like 3 com and lucents.
Cisco switch and hubs work fine in general, also HP switch is nice and working.
Second:
How long is your network cables. No more than 50 m, if you want nice connection.
Also you must use only factory made cabels. Hand made cables work but some time there is problem that is hard to determinate.
Third:
Is there more than one switch
BETWEEN point you try to ping ?
If there more than one switch
.... problem will be hard to solve.

Set
HP_BASE100_SPEED
and switch port speed
to 10HD or 100HD
depend of your switch
but not auto.
