Console display incorrect

Console display incorrect

Hi everybody.

I've just taken an ignite backup of a server ready to rebuild it with a larger OS disc. I rebooted the server, but it came up with no messages on the console - all the console displays is a menu at the bottom of the screen. This is there even when the server is turned off.

Any idea how I get rid of the menu and gain access to the server console?

Re: Console display incorrect

Dumb question - have you tried resetting the console back to defaults (holding the D key down while powering on the console)?

You can get rid if the menu on the bottom of the console screen by pressing the menu button between F4 and F5 (if it is a HP console)

Hi

What does the menu show

What type of console is it.

Re: Console display incorrect

That wasn't a dumb question - I didn't know you could do that.

I've tried it and it came up with "Default configs used. Press return to clear". I did so and it came up with the menu!

Yes, I can get rid of the menu, but it doesn't bring up the login screen I would expect. More importantly, I want to be able to interrupt the boot so I can rebuild from ignite tape.

Re: Console display incorrect

Menu (from left to right):

Line modify, Modify all, Block mode, Remote mode, Smooth scroll, Memory lock, Display functns, Auto LF.

The console is an HP 700/92.

Re: Console display incorrect

Mark,

That sounds like the typical contents of the bottom line on those consoles.

Forgive me for asking, but have you checked the connection betwixt console and server?

Re: Console display incorrect

The console (obviously) is not receiving input from the server. another dumb question - are the cable seated tight?

Verify your serial cable is going into port one on the console, if not you will have to manually configure the console.

The console has its own configuration screen for serial port input etc. you can get to it by using the key next to the menu button when the menu is on the bottom of the screen.

Re: Console display incorrect

hi,
if it is a hp console.
try to turn off the console and when you turn the console backon hod down the d key for about 10 seconds.
Then it will reset to default settings.

Re: Console display incorrect

You're forgiven Pete!

Yes I have - before I posted the request for help. There are two cables involved: one cables attaches to the console, the other to the server. The cables join to each other in the middle. The cable that goes to the server has three ports on it; one saying UPS, one saying remote, the final one saying console. The console is plugged into the port marked console!

Re: Console display incorrect

Verify that the "REMOTE MODE" box on the menu has a "*" in it. If it doesn't, press the appropriate function key for "Remote Mode", F4 I think, so thte "*" appears.

Now try again.

Re: Console display incorrect

Tried that Mark - see DCE's suggestion above.

Yes Patrick, the Remote Mode box has a * in it, but still no connection.

Are there any other * characters in the function keys

What type of server? Any Vpars involved? Npars?

Re: Console display incorrect

Mark,

Have you tried replacing the cable - it is a null modem cable, if I remember correctly.

You could also try connecting a laptop to the console cable and use hyperterminal to access the console mode.

9000/800/A500-5X

Excuse my ignorance, but how do I check for vpars and npars?

Re: Console display incorrect

An A500 is Vpar/Npar incapable so no need to worry. I just asked because, in a partitioned environment, the console is shared and can appear to be numb like this at times.

Re: Console display incorrect

Replacing the cable may be a good idea - I've just tried it on a different server with the same result. I don't think we've got a similar cable, but I'm sure that can be remedied next week.

Laptop is also an interesting idea - again, for next week.

It doesn't look as though I'm going to get this server rebuilt today, so I'll go home and try those suggestions on Monday. I would be delighted to see more suggestions then as well.

Thanks for the help so far.

Re: Console display incorrect

Hi mark,

Sorry for the last input i had to solve something and after that i hit reply without seeing the DCE said the same.

Question, what kind of hardware are you running on.
On a rp7420 you have 2 gsp console 1 master and 1 slave. if you have done a hard reboot sometimes the master is failing over and then you have too replace the cable.

Re: Console display incorrect

Have you tried putting a null modem cable in the mix somewhere. It could be that one cable is designed for a DCE connection and the other is for DTE so you would need something to switch them around.

Just a suggestion if your not getting anything from the server to console and vise versa.

Your server is not pointing to the terminal

Check terminal setup for IO

Re: Console display incorrect

hi,

If you have reset it to defaults that is not the right settings for newer hardware. A500 doesnt have npars, and it is cabled correctly from what you have said.

The terminal needs setting to VT100 with id EM100

Change it through the menu boxes (terminal config). you will have to manually type VT100 over the 70092 setting. Remember to hit F1 to save changes.
Also remote mode as others have said needs to be on*.

Re: Console display incorrect

I don't see it mentioned, so you might try shutting down the server and seeing if you can get to the GSP first.

Also the HP terminals that I've used have three ports on the back: serial A, serial B and parallel. Be sure you're on the active port. You can change that in the terminal setup. Sorry I can't give you the instructions since I don't have access to one now.

Good luck,
Tom
