console not responding

The console on one of my L-Class boxes is not receiving I/O from the box. I attempted to reset the console to the default settings by powering it off and pressing the D-ey; however, whenever it comes up, instead of stating that the defaults have been reset and press ENTER to continue, it states "No 'TO" Device...press enter to continue" Has anyone encountered this before? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: console not responding

There is the ever present making sure the cables are connected and to the correct report. Other than that I have had someone accidently change the "remote mode" and take the * off. Turn it on again, and it worked AOK.

Great minds think alike Tracey. I the cables checked out, and I have tried to reset the console both with and without remote enabled.

Re: console not responding

Well since you said 'any ideas'...I'll throw these couple of things out there too...I'm not familiar with L class but,
First:
look at /etc/inittab if you have there:
cons:123456:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty console
console
Also check if /dev/console is:
crw--w--w- 1 root sys 0 0x000000 Mar 28 13:39 /dev/console
You may need to recreate /dev/console with:
insf -evd cn
Second:
I came across this thread....who knows maybe it will help:

Re: console not responding

I have had this when the "remote mode" has the * missing and also there is a key called "stop" on the keyboard. If this has been pressed the word "stop" will appear in the bottom right of the screen. This will have this affect also.

Re: console not responding

Hi
Had this problem on a couple of L-classes; the first one solved by resetting the GSP card with a pushbutton inside the servers sidepanel (done by a HP tech).
The other one was fixed by halting the server and pulling out ALL power cords... including the disk arrays power (not done by HP tech!).
After boot everything was back to normal.

Re: console not responding

We have also encountered this problem on L and N class. The only fix we've had that has not already been described was an actual failed port on one of our N-class boxes. The tech had to go into the GSP to check it as it did not flag as a problem upon bootup. It took them about 10 minutes to replace the board.

If you can't approach to GSP reset it with button of reset, after you can approach in console.

Re: console not responding

Hello Jeromy,

Sounds like a terminal configuration problem to me. I'll bet the terminal prints the 'No To device' message regardless of its connection to the system and the D-key reset.

If so, then the D-key reset was OK, but probably not enough. The terminal has a 'To' device (external printer, etc) configured but not attached.

Press the 'User\System' key (next to f5),
then press 'device control' (f1). There should be NO asterisks in any of the 'To' device boxes. Finally, press f1 again (device mode) and make sure that there are NO asterisks in any of the 'log' boxes.

Good Luck,
Curt
